Drones For Kids – No Registration Required

Drones For Kids And The Best Quadcopter for Beginners – NO FAA Registration Required!

Drones and quadcopters are fantastic gift ideas for all types of people. Drones for kids are becoming more and more popular as they become more affordable and easy to fly. Remote control toys have always been a sure-fire hit with kids – who doesn’t remember having some sort of remote-control car when they were a kid? Even nearing 40, I remember having an electric RC car as a kid.

Remote control flying toys, however, have been elusive at affordable price points or for beginners. Remote control airplanes need a lot of room to fly, and experience if you don’t want to crash them on your first go. They’re not very forgiving. Historically, remote control planes have also been expensive.

However, with new manufacturing technologies, computer automation, and the decrease of costs in parts and material, drones and quadcopters have become the greatest flying toys for kids. They are forgiving, just sit there hovering, and can be easily enjoyed indoors. The magic of flight never ceases to light up a child’s eyes, especially when they’re in control. The best starter drones are affordable, and there’s plenty to choose from.

If you’d like to read some more general tips for drone beginners, check out our article on the subject here.

What You Need To Know Before Buying Your Kid A Drone

New FAA guidelines have parents wondering if it’s ok to buy a drone for kids. Well, the good news is, if you follow a few guidelines, and if you buy the right drone, there’s absolutely NO problem with the new FAA guidelines. This article will lead you step by step through picking a drone or quadcopter that does not require any involvement with the FAA.

If you haven’t read our article on how to register your drone with the FAA, give it a glance. The good news is that you DON’T have to register your drone with the FAA if it weighs less than .55 pounds or 250 grams. There are plenty of drones that meet that standard, and all the drones in this article comply with that need.

There are two more points that are a little more nuanced, and will need a bit of knowledge on your part to make sure you’re not running afoul of any laws. First of all, depending on your reading of the FAA guidelines, here’s what you need to be aware of if you kid is going to be flying a drone outside, even if it’s below .55 pounds.

  • Any child flying a drone under 13 should be accompanied by someone over 13
  • Do not fly within 5 miles of an airport without notifying said airport (good rule is to just avoid going anywhere near airports)
  • Maintain line-of-sight flying through the duration of flight – and this is important. There are several drones for kids that are capable of FPV or first person view flying. This means that you can fly the drone with or without goggles by a display that transmits the perspective of the drone to the pilot. To fly with goggles ONLY actually requires a certification from the FAA, regardless of pilot age or size of the drone. If you have a FPV drone with a display controller, and you maintain line-of-sight, meaning you can pilot it without REQUIRING FPV mode, you’ll be ok.

This may seem like a bit of a hassle, but if you follow this guide, you’ll be a holiday hero in the eyes of a kid who’s always wanted to experience the joy of flight.

Features To Look For In A Toy Drone

When buying a beginner a quadcopter or drone, especially for a kid, there are a few important things to look for. You don’t need to know a lot about flight, or the technical aspects of a quadcopter or drone. These are just some check-boxes that will make the experience more pleasant for a beginner, and keep them from being frustrated.

  • Smaller, “micro quadcopter” drones are harder to fly outside and are more susceptible to wind.
  • Micro drones are much more suited to indoor use.
  • Pay attention to whether or not a drone comes with blade guards – plastic that protects the blades from damage or a human from damage. If a drone looks like it can run into you without hurting you, then it probably has guards on it.
  • Some drones have blade guards and extra blades sold separately. It’s a good idea to buy these along with the drone itself.
  • Most cheap drones have less than 10 minutes of flight time, and do not come with extra batteries. In some cases, they do not feature removable batteries. If you have the option to buy extra batteries, it may be a good idea to do so, and charge them before you give the gift.
  • The easiest drones for kids to fly will be self-stabilizing. That means there’s a gyroscope and possible an accelerometer onboard that can adjust the drone automatically to make sure it stays in one place while hovering, regardless of wind. These can cost a little more, but they are truly beginner-proof. Many cheap drones do not have this feature, but some do.
  • Even thought drones may have auto-stabilizating functionality, minor manual adjustments via “trim” controls may be necessary out of the box. The instruction guide will clearly walk you through this, if necessary.
  • Advanced features like headless mode and return home provide peace of mind and make flying easier for beginners.

Micro drones are popular gifts due to their relatively low price and small size. It really is a cheap quadcopter, as well as a micro drone. They can be, however, more of a novelty toy. Low prices often mean that the drone may have a lower battery life or limited lifespan compared to other options. That doesn’t mean that they’re bad gifts to give, but one should be aware that they may have their limitations. Micro drones, especially the smallest of the bunch, should be flown indoors. The Syma X12 Mini Nano  is one of the smallest quadcopters on the market, measuring in at 3cm x 3cm x 2cm. It features a radio controller, not a cheap infrared controller, which doubles as a storage and transport device. This device features 6-axis stabilization, which is absolutely key for new drone pilots. It should be noted – all the quadcopters in this class and price range will be more difficult to fly than larger drones, and they don’t always make for the best quadcopter for beginners. So if you think that your loved-one wants to make drone ownership a hobby of theirs, you may want to skip these and go to something like the Hubsan X4, mentioned later in this article.

Key features

  • There are several manufacturers of this form factor drone, but the chassis itself is indeed one of those that are the smallest on the market. This particular model is one of the most highly rated.
  • The manufacturer states 5-7 minutes of flight time on a single 15 minute charge, but we’ve found it’s closer to five minutes flight time, and twenty minutes to charge.
  • Charges from USB connection – this is extremely handy.
  • It comes with a pre-programmed trick mode that automatically flips or rolls the drone with a press of a button.
  • There are two speeds, so even beginners can get used to its functionality without worrying about the drone getting away from them.

All in all, this is a very unique drone that makes a great gift for a kid or adult who has expressed interest in drone flying. It doesn’t have a camera, it doesn’t have any fancy extras, but it’ll fly straight, and it doesn’t take a lot of time to charge. It’s something that can easily be transported to a friend or grandparents’ house, and is sure to keep the kids happy, if just for a little while. Be sure to pick up some extra blades, however. They’re cheap, and will keep disappointment at bay.

PROS:
  • Extremely inexpensive
  • Decent battery life
  • Pre-programmed stunts
  • Beginner and advanced settings

CONS:
  • No position hold
  • No altitude hold
  • No GPS-assisted features

Remember what we said about first person view drone-flying? Well, when you get a micro drone that you’re only going to fly inside, that rule doesn’t apply. The Cheerson CX-10W may be the cheapest FPV quadcopter drone that we’ve ever seen. On top of this category-unique feature, it still comes with the all-important 6-axis stabilization feature. The Cheerson CX-10W is controlled by your smartphone over its WiFi connection, via a free, included app for iOS or Android that acts as both a virtual control pad, and as a real-time video feed for the camera. This allows you to fly the drone upstairs and out of view. FPV flying is a lot of fun, and everyone who tries it for the first time comes away with a smile. Just be warned, this drone doesn’t have the Hubble telescope attached to it. Its 0.3MP camera isn’t going to be taking award-winning photographs, but its role in regards to enabling headless flight means it doesn’t have to be.

Key Features

  • Nano size 4CH RC quadcopter with 0.3MP WiFi FPV Camera (Memory card and card reader are not included)
  • Control this quadcopter from your smart phone using WiFi – you will not need a remote controller with a stick! No need for FPV goggles, either.
  • Very compact size for easy traveling. It can fit in your pocket. Also easily can be flown indoors in small spaces due to its smaller size.
  • Latest 6-axis flight control system with adjustable gyro sensitivity
  • Live stream the camera footage directly from your phone and easily control the quadcopter.

We were tickled by this micro drone that also was a full-fledged FPV quadcopter. It’s fun to fly around the corner and surprise someone, or even a pet, and the challenge of FPV can be mastered indoors without the government getting in the way. For younger drone flyers, this is especially useful, as most FPV drones are larger, and meant to be flown outside. FPV drones that are flown outside are subject to even more restrictive pilot rules than a standard drone, so do be aware of that. We also appreciated the four extra blades included in the package.

PROS:
  • Extremely inexpensive
  • Decent battery life
  • 6-axis stabilization
  • FPV mode

CONS:
  • No altitude hold
  • No GPS-assisted features

Parrot is largely credited with creating the consumer market for drones. Starting with the AR drone, moving on to the Bebop, and now even more beginner-friendly, affordable drones like the Mambo, Parrot continues to drive innovation and expand the market for drones for kids. The Parrot Mambo nique set of propeller guards. The Mambo is very unique in that it comes with two attachments that bring a whole new level of fun to drone flying: a cannon and a grabber attachment. These make the Mambo an extremely fun flyer that can perform some cool tricks. Parrots Free Flight Mini allows you to open up the limitations of the drone that makes it a real fun drone for even advanced users.

Key Features

  • Simple swipe commends make for quick turns and loops.
  • Parrot’s pedigree in engineering makes for a very maneuverable quadcopter that is fun and easy to fly
  • It’s wheels double as blade guards, making it the first drone to be able to “walk” up walls and across the ceiling, greatly reducing crashes
  • It’s a 6 axis stabilized drone, and its mechanical design puts it up near the top in terms of speed and control for its class
  • Proven FreeFlight 3 application makes it easy to fly and the automatic pilot mode corrects angle and position
  • It has a low resolution, top-down camera – nothing special, but the kids love it, and it doubles as an instrument for flight data to aid in controlling the drone
  • Removable battery with extra packs and external chargers sold separately

The Parrot Mambo is not the cheapest drone in this list, but we think it delivers a lot of bang for the buck. The fact is that you are paying for some advanced sensors that make this drone hands down the most user-friendly quadcopter for beginners. It should be at the top of any list of drones for kids. Accessories are easy to buy, and the blades are very tough; the included blade guards do a great job of protecting the drone, furniture, pets, and kids. The removable battery and optional external charger can make for a very long session of enjoyable flying, which is good, because the battery lasts less than 10 minutes, like most other drones in this price range. Some may be disappointed in its phone-only controls, but the Parrot Flypad controller can be purchased separately, otherwise you’ll need an iOS or Android phone or tablet to control it. Because it’s Bluetooth controlled, its responsive, but its range is limited. Keep it closer than 75 feet when operating it. Overall, this is a great toy drone, and would make a fine gift for any occasion. We consider this to be one of the best drones for kids, and it is probably the best starter drone for someone who is completely unfamiliar with remote controlled flight.

PROS:
  • Most stable drone in its class
  • Advanced sensors ensure smooth control
  • Can be adjusted for beginners or advanced pilots
  • Cannon and grabber accessories add a ton of fun

CONS:
  • Expensive
  • Physical controller purchased separately

OK, who is completely excited about this? Who isn’t surprised by this! The Millennium Falcon is a dream for kids to fly. With the new trilogy in full steam, there’s renewed interest in Star Wars toys, and, lucky for us, we live in the age of drones! This drone is inexpensive, and nearly indestructible. Thanks to its design, the rotors are protected by the ship itself, so bumping into walls isn’t going to be catastrophic. All that being said, there are some limitations for beginners. There’s no altitude hold, there’s no FPV (no camera at all), and there’s no return to home. It’s alight drone, so stay inside if it’s windy. You only get around 7 minutes flight time, and the battery is not interchangeable. All of that being said, customers love this drone. It’s a well-implemented drone conversion of the Millenium Falcon, and it even provides sound effects from the controller. Definitely a great buy for the Star Wars fan in your life.

Features

  • Intuitive Control – The intuitive Remote Control is easy to use and makes flying the Millennium Falcon simple. It’s 2.4GHz communication allows for a huge flying range. Navigate the asteroid fields of your own backyard from up to 200 feet away with superior control.
  • Authentic Lights And Sounds – Authentic lights and sounds from the Star Wars universe bring the Millennium Falcon to life as you fly. Listen to the Falcon’s authentic engine sounds as you re-create your favorite mission. The LED thrusters light up as you fly into deep space just like in the movie!

The Hubsan H107C+ is an interesting beast. It’s extremely inexpensive, yet has more advanced features like altitude hold, headless mode, and stabilized 720p video and includes a 4GB MicroSD card. It does not, however, have any type of FPV mode, which the more expensive H107D does. But, it can actually take semi-decent video, better than many others in its class, and its altitude hold and headless mode make it fantastic for beginners. LED lights make it easy to see in low light environments, and it has a replaceable batter, even though replacements are hard to find, and do not get confused and purchase H107C batteries, they are not compatible. Overall, for less than $70, this is a pretty cool little drone.

Key Features

  • Intelligent Orientation Control/Headless The Hubsan X4 H107C+ features “Headless” (IOC) flight mode, which makes flying easier than before. Headless mode eliminates the need for a “nose”, as it can be flown in any direction regardless of which end is in front or back.
  • 6 AXIS GYRO The latest 6-axis flight control system is easier than ever to control, with stronger wind resistance, and greater stability.
  • 360° Eversion One key 360°roll, continuous roll for perfect action and wonderful performance.
  • Altitude Hold Equipped with the latest altitude hold technology which allows for stable flight to get better image
  • HD Camera The Hubsan X4 H107C+ also comes with a HD camera (resolution:1280×720). Ideal for taking aerial photos and videos.
PROS:
  • Extremely inexpensive camera drone
  • Includes 4GB memory card
  • 6-axis stabilization
  • Altitude hold

CONS:
  • A little twitchy, but still a great fly

It’s an interesting phenomenon with drones – the more expensive you get, the more features they come packed with that make the EASIER for beginners! While $200 is no pocket change, this is a killer drone that may be the easiest quadcopter to fly in this guide, thanks to some really nifty features that Hubsan equipped this quadcopter with that are just as good for intermediate fliers as it is for the quadcopter beginner. With over double the battery life of quadcopters in cheaper price brackets, a larger flight platform for stability, GPS equipped and one-touch automatic return, this is a drone for a kid or adult that’s serious about enjoying his or her present through the next holiday. And you’ll be one of the coolest parents/relatives/or friend around.

Key Features

  • Newest Hubsan H502S drone upgrade equipped with a built-in 720p HD CMOS camera video receciver.
  • Latest 6 Axis Gyro fly control system , wind resistance design and altitude mode make it more stable by automatically controlling the throttle
  • Allows for flying FPV mode and headless flight – the controller has a built in LCD for real time video receiving from the onboard camera
  • Safety features like GPS-assisted altitude hold for stability, follow me mode so the drone can track your controller, and auto land if you fly out of range are absolutely wonderful features to have that typically cost a lot more, included stock with this platform
  • Quality transmitters allow for greater flight distances
  • Lightweight and durable air frame keeps this advanced drone from exceeding weight requirements for FAA registration – fly this drone government free!

This is a modern-generation 6-axis stabilized quadcopter, with adjustable gyroscope, which makes it super stable. That means it’s easy to fly, and a fantastic beginner drone or quadcopter for any hobbyist.

The one-touch automatic return uses the GPS system to return to where it took off, with an accuracy of 0-2m. So if you panic, just hit a button, and your drone will return to you automatically. It can also find its current altitude and you can set it not to go above that height. That will aid in learning to fly and keep the drone from getting to far from you by accident. And even though it has advanced features like a FPV screen on the controller, it’s still able to fly headless, which is great for beginners trying to orientate themselves with flying for the first time.

This drone also has an automatic “follow me” function, where you can command it to follow the remote control, wherever you may take it. It also has low power protection; the Hubsan X4 H502S will decide when it’s running out of power, and it will automatically return. And if your wireless signal is ever interrupted, it will automatically land, unlike drones that do not have this functionality and may continue flying, and do not have a return to home function. It also is firmware upgradable for future-proofing, and an expert mode for those making their way from beginner to intermediate copter piloting, and ready to take that next step.

We can’t stress enough how highly we think of this drone. Its advanced features serve the beginner better than a low price. This Hubsan drones model is hands down easier to fly than any other drone on this list with the exception of the Parrot Mambo. Honestly, for all the features they packed in here, you’d think it be one fat drone! But that’s not the case – it stays under that .55 pound FAA threshold to deliver one of the most advanced and beginner-friendly experiences you can find in any drone that doesn’t need registration.

If you’re buying this for someone serious about beginning drone flying, or is just learning to fly, spending a little more money on this gem will likely make sure they have the best experience. This system is a standout unit in our quadcopter reviews. We think it is probably the best FPV quadcopter for beginners.

PROS:
  • Altitude and position hold
  • GPS equipped
  • FPV streaming
  • Headless Mode
  • Return To Home
  • Excellent handling

CONS:
  • Pricey
