Parrot Bebop 2 FPV

9 Total Score
An update to a solid platform, the addition of FPV goggles to the Parrot Bebop 2 breathes new life into a classic.

The Parrot Bebop was one of the first affordable camera drones to deliver truly stable and beautiful video. It did so without an oversized gimbal, and it was a great bridge product until prosumer drones came down in price. Having bottomed out in pricing, updates including the Parrot FPV Cockpitglasses makes the Bebop 2 line fresh and modern.

PROS
  • Longer battery life
  • Excellent FullHD stabilized video
  • Over one mile range
  • FPV googles and analog controller included
CONS
  • Requires smartphone for FPV goggle functionality

Parrot Bebop 2 FPV Full Review

Parrot Disco FPV GogglesAn update to the classic we all know and love, the Parrot Bebop 2 FPV comes bundled with the Skycontroller 2 and Cockpitglasses. A more traditional option to the Disco, the Bebop comes with a digitally stabilized 1080p camera that delivers the same smooth shots as it s predecessor. Comparatively inexpensive to other drones with its capabilities, you’ll still need your phone for the FPV experience, similar to the Samsung Gear VR, but your hands will be for that analog tactile feel you’ll find with the Disco. A welcome and surprising offer, the Parrot Bebop 2 FPV bundle brings life into what is turning into an iconic platform that has a lot of legs in the market.

The Cockpitglasses give you 90 degrees FOV for a very immersive first person video experience. You’ll need a smart phone with a screen size of 4.7″ to 5.7″ to use the FPV goggles. Of course, you can still you use your smart phone by itself to control it, but why? It also comes with the Skycontroller 2, which you can mount your phone on, and it helps the drone’s maximum flight distance reach almost one and a quarter miles.

The 1080p digitally stabilized video is above average, but doesn’t rival the 4K capabilities of its more expensive competitors. It accomplishes its digital stabilization by actually shooting in a higher resolution, and using hardware and software to create a 1080p frame that remains stable even as the drone wobbles during flight. It’s very effective. It doesn’t rival more expensive 4K drones that cost a thousand or more, but it sure beats the pants off one-axis gimbal drones that may go for the same price. It comes with an 8GB internal flash drive, and encodes in H264 up to 30fps. It can take pictures up to 4096 x 3072 pixels, and can even shoot in RAW. Its 180 degree fish-eye lens has a 1/2.3″ aperture. If you’re looking for better video at about the same price, we’d recommend the Phantom 3 Standard.

We’ve gotta say, 25 minutes of battery life is really nice to have. Parrot says it’s the first drone under 500 grams to have batter life last that long, and we’re happy to have it. One of the issues with cheaper drones is that they often cut corners when it comes to battery life. With the Parrot Bebop 2 FPV, you’re buying a quadcopter that you can actually enjoy.

Flight mechanics are solid. The drone is capable of climbing at 6 m/s, and travelling at 16 m/s, which is just a hair slower than the new DJI Mavic Pro, which goes for several hundred dollars more.

The biggest question we get is “Should I get the Bebop 2 or the Phantom 3 Standard?” – our answer has to do with what your needs are. The Phantom 3 Standard has better video, but does not deliver a FPV flight experience, nor does it have the range of the Bebop 2. If you are primarily concerned with video quality, go with the Phantom. If you’re looking for a fun time zipping around the skies in an immersive way, the Bebop 2 doesn’t disappoint.
